Why install new gutters?
Your home’s gutter system not only plays a central role in protecting against water damage, but also contributes to the aesthetic of the house. In addition, the gutter system you choose is a factor in determining how much maintenance you have to perform to keep gutters working properly, year after year.
The main job of your home’s gutters is to carry water away from the house. For that reason, most homeowners consider functionality first and foremost when selecting gutters. They choose gutters that drain water efficiently and that are resistant to the buildup of clog-inducing debris.
That said, aesthetics are a consideration as well. Today’s gutters are available in several styles. Half-round (or U-shaped) gutters offer a classic look and are popular on older homes. Alternatively, owners of more modern homes often choose K-style gutters, which can drain water more rapidly. Owners of historically significant homes may opt for an integrated gutter system that is built into the roof, ensuring that trim or other unique architectural features are not obscured.
In addition to choosing the shape of gutter that best fits your home, you’ll also want to select auxiliary components like downspouts, elbows, and brackets. Again, these are available in several styles and colors to match varying aesthetics.
Gutter material, too, ranges from vinyl and aluminum to copper, zinc, and steel. Different types of gutter materials cater to different architectural aesthetics. For instance, copper gutters are often a good fit for older homes, which in many cases would have had this type of gutter system installed originally.
Benefits of new gutters
Older gutters that don’t drain water fast enough, or that are improperly sloped in such a way that water pools in the middle of the gutter rather, leave your home prone to excess water buildup along the foundation.
Additionally, outdated gutters typically offer no protection against the buildup of debris. That means that you have to clean them manually every season, or risk clogs that prevent gutters from doing their job.
New gutters eliminate both of these problems. Rot-resistant material like vinyl allows gutters to withstand decades of exposure without springing leaks or pulling away from the house. Gutter covers that can be installed along with the gutters themselves deflect debris away from your gutters, ensuring smooth drainage with virtually no maintenance.
Reasons to install new gutters
No matter where your home is located or which type of roofing system you have, new gutters help ensure that rainwater flows away from your home properly. In turn, they minimize the risk of flooding damage in the basement and rot to your home’s exterior, which may be caused by water buildup.
In addition, the wide range of gutter materials available today means that you can install gutters that will last decades without worrying about rust or the buildup of mold. You can also take advantage of special designs that help prevent the intrusion of leaves and other debris that may cause clogs.
Because of the relatively low price of installation and the long lifetime of modern gutter systems, installing new gutters is a cost-effective way to protect your home from the elements, while also reducing the amount of maintenance you need to perform.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Our dealers are happy to answer any questions you might have about gutter installation. Following are questions we commonly receive from customers.
How much does gutter installation cost on average?
The price for new gutters depends on several factors.
- Size: The most significant factor is the overall size, measured in linear feet, of the roof edges that need to be fitted with gutters.
- Shape: The roof shape is a factor in calculating the size of the gutter system. Installing gutters on gable-style roofs, which look like a triangle when viewed from the side, is typically less expensive than on hip-style roofs, in which the roof has four sloped surfaces that meet at a point in the middle. Because gable roofs only have two surfaces from which water needs to be drained, they require fewer linear feet of gutters.
- Material: In general, vinyl and aluminum gutters are the least costly, while you’ll pay a premium for copper gutters.
- Style: Simple gutter styles are less expensive.
The most expensive gutter installations are those that involve integrated gutters, which need to be built into your home’s roof. However, these types of systems are typically used only on houses with unique historical features that would be obscured using standard gutters. Most homes today use gutters that are fastened directly to the fascia boards along the edge of the roof, rather than being integrated directly into the roof.

How often do you need to replace a gutter?
In general, expect gutter systems to last 20 to 30 years. However, the exact lifespan of your gutters will vary depending in large part on the type of material the gutters are made from. Most types of metal gutters will rust and begin to fail after about 20 years, whereas vinyl gutters can last for years without rusting. However, even vinyl systems can wear down over time due to warping, and the fasteners used to fix gutters to the house will eventually rust and fail.
A second factor shaping your gutter’s lifespan is how well it is maintained. If you have gutters that lack protection against leaves, dirt, and other debris, and you don’t remove the debris regularly, water will pool within the gutters. The result is often gutters that rust or rot through quickly because the standing water erodes protective coatings designed to guard the gutters from corrosion.
How long does it take for a gutter to be installed?
The time required to install new gutters depends on how large your house is and how difficult it is for contractors to access the location where gutters will be installed. Installation is faster in small houses, and in houses that consist of a single story. The job will also take longer if dealers need to remove an existing gutter system before installing new gutters.
That said, most gutter installations are quite fast.
